Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution and characterization of Candida species from the patients with Oral and Maxillofacial disease.

The results were as folllows:
1. Candida albiams(C. albicans) and Candida tropicalis(C, tropicalis) were isolated from male and female patients, but Candida krusei(C, krusei) was isolated from only female.
2. C. albicans and C. tropicalis were isolated from both buccal surface of oral cavity and dorsum of tongue, but C krusei was isolated from the buccal surface.
3 C. albicans showed no differences among age groups. The isolation frequency of C.tropicalis from the age group of within 20-year-old patients was higher than the rests of age groups(P<0.10), and C. krusei was isolated from the group of 21 to 30-year-old patients.4. The isolation frequency of C albicans from the 3 weeks antibiotic therapy gruup was higher than that of the patients within 1 week, for 2 weeks and antibiotic therapy(P<0.05), and the isolation frequency of C. tropicalis from the patient over 4 weeks antibiotic therapy group was higher than that of the patients with 1 week, for 2 weeks and 3 weeks antibiotic theraphy (P<0.05).
5. Seven biotypes of C albicans were identfied from the oral cavity in patients with oral and maxillofacial disease

These results suggest that Candida species might diversely exist in the patients with Oral and Maxillofacial disease, and the isolation frequency of Candida species might be related to the duration of antibiotic therapy.
